Addictions
I have a special interest in therapeutic responses to addictions. When we are in the grip of an addiction we can do terrible harm to the fabric of our lives, to ourselves and those we care about. We may completely lose the capacity to think positively on our own behalf, lose perspective and struggle to take basic care of our responsibilities.
I know from experience that psychotherapy can in many cases be an extremely effective tool for working with a variety of addictions and compulsions, from recreational drug use and heavy drinking, through to many other out of control behaviours, such as for instance sexual compulsiveness.
I find that when people feel they have been really listened to and that their issues have been thought through with someone else, then all sorts of behaviours can change, all sorts of interesting things can happen and very often something better and different results can take the place of what may have been very damaging, even life-threatening. |
